Эта песня русских цыган вовсе не цыганская народная, она написана композитором Петровым на стихи английского поэта Редьярда Киплинга (вольный перевод Кружкова).

Благодаря этой песне к третьему президенту и 10-му премьер-министру России Дмитрию Медведеву в интернете приклеилось прозвище Шмель (Шмеле):
Цитата из прессы: «На пятом курсе Артур Парфенчиков женился, родители организовали свадьбу в ресторане «Метрополь», - рассказывает Дмитрий Александров, старший преподаватель Петрозаводского филиала Санкт-Петербургского университета МВД РФ. - Главными заводилами были Дмитрий Медведев и Константин Чуйченко: первый был свидетелем, второй - тамадой. Помню, как оба переоделись цыганами и пели «Мохнатого шмеля» из «Жестокого романса». Все пошли в пляс и даже не заметили, что невесту украли».
Прозвище пошло в народ после того, как эти воспоминания показали по телевидению.
